A német post-metal kollektíva, a The Ocean pályafutásának egyik legnagyobb fordulópontjához érkezett. Az elmúlt évek tagcseréi, a Holocene album megosztó fogadtatása és a zenekar szinte teljes újjászületése után Robin Staps és társai egy merész, kozmikus léptékű alkotással térnek vissza. Az új lemez, a Solaris nem csupán egy új fejezet, hanem egy teljes újrakezdés története is, egy olyan korszaké, amelyben a zenekar szerint „elvesztettük a sötétséget”.
A The Ocean neve már régóta egyet jelent a konceptuális gondolkodással, a progresszív metal határainak feszegetésével és a tudományos, filozófiai témák zenei feldolgozásával. A 2023-as Holocene után azonban sok rajongó úgy érezte, hogy a zenekar egy elektronikusabb, visszafogottabb irányba mozdult el. A lemez fogadtatása vegyes volt: egyes kritikusok bátor fejlődésként értékelték, míg mások szerint hiányzott belőle a korábbi albumok elementáris ereje.

A következő években a zenekar történetének egyik legviharosabb időszakát élte át. A klasszikusnak számító Holocene felállás fokozatosan felbomlott, és 2025-re a tagság jelentős része távozott. Sokan úgy gondolták, hogy a The Ocean története ezzel véget érhet. Robin Staps azonban nem adta fel, és új zenészekkel építette újjá a kollektívát. A friss felállásban olyan nevek tűnnek fel, mint Enrico Tiberi, Lane Shi, Emmanuel Jessua és Marco Gennaro, miközben Mattias Hägerstrand basszusgitáros továbbra is a csapat egyik meghatározó alakja maradt.
Az új album, a Solaris 2026. szeptember 25-én jelenik meg a Pelagic Records gondozásában. A közel hetvenperces konceptalbumot Andrej Tarkovszkij legendás 1972-es sci-fi filmje ihlette, amely az emlékezet, az identitás és az emberi tudat határait kutatja. Robin Staps szerint ez a The Ocean huszonöt éves történetének legambiciózusabb munkája.
A lemez első előfutára, a tízperces Light Pollution máris komoly visszhangot váltott ki a nemzetközi szaksajtóban. A dal egyszerre kapcsolódik a Holocene elektronikus világához és mutat új irányokat, miközben monumentális riffek, atmoszférikus szintetizátorok és filmszerű hangszerelés építi fel a szerzeményt. A dal központi gondolata a modern világ állandó láthatósága. Robin Staps szerint a fényáradat korában megszűntek a rejtett terek, eltűnt a sötétség, amely korábban menedéket nyújtott az embernek. „Mindent látni lehet, minden átlátszóvá vált, elvesztettük a sötétséget, amelyben elbújhattunk.”

A külföldi zenei magazinok kiemelik, hogy a Solaris nemcsak tematikájában, hanem hangzásában is a zenekar egyik legösszetettebb vállalkozása. A felvételeken közreműködött Thorsten Quaeschning, a legendás Tangerine Dream vezető alakja is, aki moduláris szintetizátorokkal járult hozzá az album hangképéhez. A keverést és maszterelést a svéd producerlegenda, Jens Bogren végezte.
A rajongói közösségekben is élénk a várakozás. Reddit-fórumokon különösen nagy érdeklődést váltott ki az új énekesi felállás, valamint a lemez kozmikus és földrajzi utalásokkal teli koncepciója. Többen már most a Phanerozoic korszak óta a legizgalmasabb The Ocean anyagnak nevezik a készülő albumot, és nagy várakozással figyelik, hogyan működik majd az új tagság a teljes lemez terjedelmében.
A Solaris így nem egyszerűen egy új album. Egy zenekar túlélésének története, amely a szétesés széléről tért vissza. A The Ocean ismét a nagy kérdéseket teszi fel: kik vagyunk, mit jelent emlékezni, és mit veszítünk el akkor, amikor a világot már soha nem borítja be a sötétség. The German post-metal collective The Ocean has reached one of the most significant turning points in its career. Following years of lineup changes, the divisive reception of Holocene, and what was essentially a complete rebirth of the band, Robin Staps and his companions return with a bold work of cosmic proportions. Their new album, Solaris, is not merely the beginning of a new chapter, it is the story of a complete restart, set in an era in which, according to the band, “we have lost the darkness.”
For years, The Ocean has been synonymous with conceptual thinking, pushing the boundaries of progressive metal, and transforming scientific and philosophical ideas into music. After the release of Holocene in 2023, however, many fans felt the band had moved toward a more electronic and restrained direction. The album received a mixed response: some critics praised it as a courageous step forward, while others felt it lacked the elemental power that had defined the band’s earlier works.
The years that followed became one of the most turbulent periods in The Ocean’s history. The lineup that recorded Holocene gradually dissolved, and by 2025 a significant portion of the band had departed. Many believed this could mark the end of The Ocean’s story. Robin Staps, however, refused to give up and rebuilt the collective with a new generation of musicians. The nearly seventy-minute concept album draws inspiration from Andrei Tarkovsky’s legendary 1972 science-fiction film, exploring themes of memory, identity, and the limits of human consciousness. According to Robin Staps, it is the most ambitious work in The Ocean’s twenty-five-year history.
The album’s first single, the ten-minute epic Light Pollution, has already generated considerable attention throughout the international music press. The track simultaneously builds upon the electronic textures of Holocene while pointing toward entirely new directions. Monumental riffs, atmospheric synthesizers, and cinematic arrangements combine to create one of the band’s most expansive compositions to date. At its core lies a reflection on the perpetual visibility of modern life. Staps argues that in an age overwhelmed by artificial light, hidden spaces have disappeared, along with the darkness that once offered refuge. “Everything can be seen, everything has become transparent, we have lost the darkness in which we could once hide.”

International music magazines have emphasized that Solaris is among the most complex undertakings in The Ocean’s catalog, both thematically and sonically. The recordings feature contributions from Thorsten Quaeschning, leader of the legendary electronic music pioneers Tangerine Dream, whose modular synthesizer work adds a distinctive dimension to the album’s soundscape. Mixing and mastering duties were handled by acclaimed Swedish producer Jens Bogren.
Anticipation is equally strong within the fan community.
